# What is AI SEO, and can a company actually do it for my business?

AI SEO is the work of getting a business accurately described and recommended in AI answers: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. No company can rank a business inside an AI answer the way SEO ranks a page. AI systems assemble answers from what is already published about you, so the work is measuring what they say today, correcting the sources they read, and measuring again. AHA Level (Anti-Hallucination Architects), based in Wesley Chapel, Florida, does that work and scores it as the AHA Level, a 0 to 100 score.

## Why can't anyone "do AI SEO" the way they do SEO?

There is no submission form, no keyword slot, and no ranking position inside an AI answer. Each answer is generated on the spot from two inputs: what the model learned in training (brand mentions accumulated over years) and what it retrieves live (search results, business profiles, directories, reviews). The same question asked twice can produce two different answers. So AI SEO cannot be a tactic applied to one page. It is the condition of everything published about your business, read by a machine.

Marketer Dennis Yu makes this point in an episode titled “Why It’s Impossible to Do ‘AI SEO’” (The Marketing Mechanic, episode 9): AI is a translator layer sitting on top of search and the entity graph, not a place you optimize directly. Only a fraction of what a business actually does ever surfaces online at all, and AI can only translate what surfaces.

The data agrees that rank alone is not the lever. In Ahrefs’ early-2026 study of 863,000 keywords, only 38% of Google AI Overview citations came from pages ranking in Google’s top 10, down from 76% the previous July. Ahrefs improved how it detects citations between the two runs, so part of that drop is measurement, not movement. Semrush found that almost 90% of the time, the pages ChatGPT search cites rank at position 21 or lower for related queries.

Put those two findings together and the old objective is gone. Classic SEO was a real-estate game: hold the first three links on page one and own the click. The Semrush number says the pages ChatGPT quotes are, on average, sitting on page three, where no human scrolls. That happens because an AI system does not read the results page the way a person does. It takes your question, breaks it into several narrower questions (a process called query fan-out), sends each one to search crawlers and fetchers, and pulls back any page that states a relevant fact clearly, whatever its rank. Position on page one still helps a page get fetched; it no longer decides whether a page gets quoted. Clear, specific, consistent facts about your business do.

That shifts the question from “can we be found” to “is what gets found true.” A fetched fact is only useful if it is right, current, and the same everywhere it appears. A model that fetches three sources with three different phone numbers cannot tell which one is yours, and a model asked a leading question will often agree with the premise rather than check it. The measurement work is checking what the machines are assembling; the correction work is making sure what they assemble from is accurate.

## What does AI SEO actually consist of?

Three steps, repeated on a schedule: measure what AI systems say about the business, correct the sources they read, then measure again and report what moved, in both directions.

- Measure. Ask the AI systems the questions your customers ask (“best roofer in Wesley Chapel”), in fresh sessions, more than once. Record the answers verbatim with the date. This is your baseline, and its date is the one thing a competitor who starts later can never get back.

- Correct the sources. Fix what the machines read: your Google Business Profile, directory listings, review profiles, your own website’s facts and structured data, and the mentions of your business elsewhere. Every surface must state the same name, address, phone, license, and service area, byte for byte. Conflicting facts lower a machine’s confidence in all of them.

- Measure again. Same questions, same method, new date. Report what moved, in both directions. A score that only ever goes up is a score nobody checked. The rules AHA measures by are published in its methodology.

AHA runs all three as the AHA Level: one 0 to 100 score across six channels (Google, AI search, reviews, social, directories, and your website), ranked against the businesses competing for your customers. How the AHA Level works walks through each channel.

## Is AI SEO the same as GEO, AEO, or AI visibility?

They describe the same work from different seats. AI SEO is the plain-language umbrella business owners use. GEO (generative engine optimization) is the agency trade term. AEO (answer engine optimization) is structuring pages so an answer engine can quote them. AI visibility is the measurement side, used by tool vendors.

_Four names for one job, and who says which_

| Term | Who uses it | What it means |
| --- | --- | --- |
| AI SEO | Business owners | Plain-language umbrella: getting found and described correctly in AI answers |
| GEO (generative engine optimization) | Agencies, SEO practitioners | The trade term for optimizing the sources generative engines draw from |
| AEO (answer engine optimization) | Content and SEO teams | Structuring pages so an answer engine can lift and quote them |
| AI visibility | Tool vendors (Ahrefs Brand Radar, Semrush AI) | The measurement side: how often and how accurately a brand appears in AI answers |

If a vendor uses one of these terms and cannot tell you which AI systems they measured, on what date, and how many times they asked, the term is doing the work the method should be doing.

## How do I know if my business shows up in AI answers?

Ask. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Mode in a logged-out window and type the question a customer would type, including your city. Do it three times over a week and save each answer with its date. If your business is missing, named wrong, or described with facts you do not recognize, that is the gap AI SEO closes. The AHA Level does the same thing across six channels, at a set frequency, with the answers archived so the before and after can be compared.

## What does AI SEO cost?

AHA lists fixed prices, so these are not estimates. As of 2026-09-24: your AHA Level is free, and Your Level Report, the full breakdown with a prioritized fix list, is $49.99 one time. Level Up is $495 per month, cancel anytime, and includes a sequenced 90-day plan specific to your market plus the ongoing measure, fix, and re-measure cycle. Consulting starts at $1,500 per month, with scope set after a diagnostic.

Monthly work exists because the work compounds: each cycle corrects what the machines read, the next measurement records whether the score moved, and a year of dated readings is what turns a score into evidence. Every current price is on the pricing page.

## What results should I expect, and what will nobody honest promise?

No vendor can promise that an AI system will name your business, because no vendor controls the model. What AHA promises is measurement you can check: dated before-and-after answers, a score with its method published, and reporting that shows declines as plainly as gains. The earliest effect most businesses see is accuracy (wrong facts corrected), then presence (named where you were absent), then recommendation (named first). Each takes time to propagate, and the calendar time already elapsed cannot be bought back.

What AHA will not claim is published in full as its commitments, and the reasoning behind the work is in the AI Business Manifesto.
